In the latest round of primary elections, former President Donald Trump's endorsement continues to wield significant influence within the Republican Party. Meanwhile, progressives faced setbacks in high-profile Democratic congressional primaries. Let's take a closer look at the key takeaways from these primaries.

In a special congressional election in California's Central Valley district, Trump-endorsed candidate Vince Fong emerged victorious. Fong, who enjoyed the backing of both Trump and former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, defeated local County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux to fill the remaining six months of McCarthy's term. This triumph signals Trump's persistent clout within the GOP, even in a reliably blue state.

Another example of Trump's endorsement power was seen in Georgia's 3rd District primary race. Former adviser Brian Jack, endorsed by the former president, secured the first-place finish in the far-right field, but fell just short of 50%. This means Jack will face off against Mike Dugan, who came in second, in a June runoff election. Trump's endorsement track record in contested GOP elections demonstrates his ability to sway the outcome in intra-party races.

However, it was not all good news for progressives. Susheela Jayapal, sister of progressive leader Rep. Pramila Jayapal, suffered defeat in the Democratic primary for Oregon's 3rd Congressional District. State Rep. Mazine Dexter emerged as the winner, thwarting Jayapal's bid to succeed longtime Democratic Rep. Earl Blumenauer. Jayapal had garnered support not only from her sister but also from progressive figures like Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

In Oregon's 5th District, establishment Democrats took on the progressive left in their battle to challenge GOP Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer. Two years ago, progressive Jamie McLeod-Skinner won the primary but narrowly lost in the general election, allowing Republicans to flip the seat. Determined to avoid a repeat, national Democrats threw their weight behind state Rep. Janelle Bynum, spending around $1 million on her campaign.

These primary results underscore the enduring power of Trump's endorsement in Republican contests. Meanwhile, progressives faced obstacles in reliably blue states, showcasing the challenges they face within their own party. As the election cycle progresses, the impact of endorsements and intra-party divisions will continue to shape the landscape of American politics.
