**Trump Pledges Continued Government Support for Mortgage Giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac**
President Donald Trump assured on Tuesday that the government would maintain its backing for mortgage leaders Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, despite potential plans to relinquish federal control over the entities. This vow comes amidst long-standing concerns about the potential impact on mortgage rates if these companies were to lose their government safety net.
Prior to being placed under conservatorship in 2008, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac operated with what was termed an "implicit guarantee" — essentially a market belief that the federal government would intervene if the companies faced financial trouble.
Last week, President Trump hinted at the idea of transitioning the companies back to public ownership, nearly 17 years after they were rescued during the financial turmoil of 2008. On Tuesday, he reinforced his commitment to overseeing the mortgage giants, ensuring continued government support.
"I want to be clear, the U.S. Government will keep its implicit GUARANTEES, and I will stay strong in my position on overseeing them as President," Trump declared on Truth Social.
Trump's statement may provide some clarity on the existential guarantee for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, but it leaves open questions about how these guarantees might function operationally.
