In a campaign rally held on Saturday night at the Schnecksville fire hall in Pennsylvania, supporters of former President Donald Trump chanted "genocide Joe" in reference to President Biden's unconditional support for Israel amidst its recent assault in Gaza. Trump, echoing their sentiment, acknowledged the chant, stating that they "were not wrong" and criticizing Biden for his handling of the situation.
The chant came in the wake of Iran's retaliatory drone and missile strikes into Israel over the weekend, following an attack on an Iranian diplomatic facility by Israel two weeks prior. Israel, the United States, and their allies managed to intercept most of the over 300 drones and missiles launched by Iran. World leaders, including Biden, condemned the assault and reaffirmed their unwavering support for Israeli security.
While it remains unclear exactly what Trump's rallygoers intended by chanting "genocide Joe," the phrase has been previously used by some Arab American and Muslim voters, as well as progressives who have criticized Biden's decision to continue sending weapons to Israel amidst the ongoing military campaign in Gaza that has reportedly claimed the lives of more than 33,000 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
In response to Biden's support for Israel, Democratic voters in several states, including Michigan and Wisconsin, have organized efforts to vote "uncommitted" or "uninstructed" in their states' primaries as a warning to the president. They are calling for a permanent ceasefire and an end to military aid to Israel.
Trump, in his rally, claimed that the attack from Iran "would not have happened" if he were still the president, although he did not elaborate on how he would have prevented it. He expressed his support for the people of Israel and criticized what he perceived as weakness in dealing with the situation.
It is worth noting that in the final days of Trump's presidency in 2020, Iran had attacked a U.S. base in Iraq, resulting in numerous soldiers suffering from traumatic brain injuries.
As tensions continue to escalate in the region, the global community is closely monitoring the situation and calling for diplomatic efforts to deescalate the conflict.
