Gaetz is known for his strong loyalty to Trump but has also been a polarizing figure within the Republican Party. Unlike other nominations, Gaetz's selection was initially shared on Trump's social media rather than through a formal announcement from the transition team.

House Speaker Mike Johnson confirmed that Gaetz resigned from Congress on Wednesday, which effectively ends the House Ethics Committee's ongoing investigation into allegations of child sex trafficking against him. As a result, no report on the probe will be issued. The Ethics Committee had been reviewing multiple claims against Gaetz, including sexual misconduct, drug use, and improper acceptance of gifts. Gaetz has consistently denied all allegations and attributed the scandal to political enemies, particularly former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

Gaetz's resignation will trigger a special election for his House seat, representing Florida's 1st Congressional District, historically a Republican stronghold. Despite his legal troubles, Gaetz has been a staunch supporter of Trump, frequently defending him on cable news and social media. Earlier this year, he was seen in New York during Trump's trial, showing solidarity with the former president and echoing Trump's rhetoric against what they term the "deep state."

In announcing Gaetz as his nominee for attorney general, Trump appears to prioritize loyalty and perhaps retribution. Hours before the nomination, Gaetz posted a message on X, indicating his readiness to challenge established government agencies like the FBI and ATF. Should he be confirmed, Gaetz would have oversight over both organizations.

The nomination has elicited mixed reactions within the GOP. While most Republicans have refrained from openly supporting Gaetz, some influential figures like Texas Senator John Cornyn and South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham have emphasized the need for a thorough examination during the confirmation hearings. Notably, Trump critics such as Senators Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski have voiced skepticism regarding Gaetz's candidacy.

Gaetz's path to confirmation is likely to be challenging. Though Republicans will hold a 53-seat majority in the Senate, relying on Vice President-elect JD Vance to break any ties, a few defections could jeopardize his nomination. Senators like North Carolina’s Thom Tillis predict that the confirmation hearings will draw significant attention and scrutiny, setting the stage for a contentious process.

As Gaetz prepares for what promises to be a heated confirmation battle, his loyalty to Trump and his ability to navigate the allegations against him will be put to a formidable test.
