In a display of frustration, former President Donald Trump took to Truth Social, his newly launched social media platform, to criticize Vice President Kamala Harris's acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention. Trump's remarks led to an unexpected turn of events during his call-in interview with Fox News hosts Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum. The interview abruptly ended after about 10 minutes, with Trump appearing flustered and accidentally pressing buttons on his phone.
During the live interview, Trump voiced his criticisms of Harris's acceptance speech, repeatedly referring to her as "Comrade Kamala" and labeling her as a "radical." In response, Harris hit back, accusing the Republican nominee of being soft on dictators and posing a threat to democracy and American values. She dubbed him "an unserious man."
Baier and MacCallum attempted to interject and ask questions throughout the conversation, but Trump continued speaking without pause. The former president seemed taken aback by the rise of his new opponent following the end of President Joe Biden's campaign and Trump's previous endorsement of Harris.
Taking to Truth Social afterward, Trump vented his frustration, claiming that Baier had called him before Harris's speech to ask for his critique. He expressed disappointment in what he perceived as a lack of substance in Harris's address, as important issues such as fracking, crime, and inflation were not mentioned.
Trump also addressed claims that he made the calls to media outlets himself, refuting them as false. He contended that the media reaches out to him due to his high ratings and dubbed himself the "Ratings Machine."
MacCallum had mentioned Harris's success with women, Hispanic voters, and Black voters, but Trump quickly interjected, asserting that he himself was the one experiencing success in these demographics.
Maggie Haberman, a longtime Trump observer from The New York Times, commented on his post-Harris speech interviews with Fox News and Newsmax, noting that the former president appeared to be "not in command" of himself. Haberman stated that it was evident that Harris's presence had rattled him.
The clash between Trump and Harris continues to illustrate the intense political tensions that persist in the United States. As the 2022 midterm elections approach, it remains to be seen how these confrontations will shape the political landscape.
