With just over three weeks remaining until Election Day, new national polls indicate that former President Donald Trump is closing the gap on Vice President Kamala Harris, who recently replaced President Biden atop the Democrats' 2024 ticket. The surveys show a tight race between the two nominees, with Trump gaining some momentum in the final stages.

In a recent ABC News/Ipsos poll, Harris leads Trump by a slim margin of 50%-48% among likely voters, a decrease from her six-point lead last month. Similarly, an NBC News poll of registered voters shows a deadlock at 48% for both candidates, a significant change from Harris's previous five-point advantage. Furthermore, a CBS News/YouGov survey shows Harris with a three-point lead over Trump, slightly down from her earlier four-point edge.

The dynamics of the race shifted dramatically following President Biden's challenging debate performance against Trump in late June. Initially, Trump opened a single-digit lead over Biden, but Biden's departure from the race and the Democrats' consolidation around Harris altered the landscape. Harris experienced a surge in fundraising and favorable ratings, bolstered by the Democrats' convention in late August and the subsequent debate in early September.

However, as autumn approaches, Harris's favorable ratings appear to be waning. Republicans are rallying around Trump, and the gender gap in support between the two nominees is widening. Longtime Republican pollster Neil Newhouse noted that the Harris campaign seems to be stalling, with a perception that her administration would be a "second Biden Administration."

While national polls provide a snapshot of the race, the presidential election hinges on state-by-state battles for electoral votes. Latest polling in seven crucial battleground states, which determined Biden's 2020 victory, suggests another close race for 2024. Suffolk University Political Research Center Director David Paleologos cautioned that it is too early to definitively declare Trump's momentum, stating that more data points are needed to confirm poll trends in such a polarized country.
