In a fiery response to the scathing criticism from former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama at the Democratic National Convention, former President Donald Trump rallied his supporters in Asheboro, North Carolina, on Wednesday. Trump lashed out at the Obamas, portraying their "personal" attacks as justification for his own contentious behavior.
Addressing the crowd at the campaign rally, Trump wasted no time addressing the Obamas' remarks from the previous night. He highlighted their supposed hypocrisy of asking him to stick to policy while engaging in personal attacks themselves. "Did you see Barack Hussein Obama last night taking little shots? He was taking shots at your president and so was Michelle," Trump exclaimed, garnering cheers from his supporters.
At one point during the rally, Trump conducted a poll among the crowd, asking whether he should retaliate with personal attacks or refrain from doing so. The resounding response came in favor of getting personal, as the cheer volume reached an enthusiastic high.
The Obamas' speeches at the DNC presented a departure from their previous call for the party to "go high." Michelle Obama particularly expressed her disdain for Trump's approach, calling it "petty, unhealthy, and unpresidential." She accused him of resorting to lies and insults instead of offering real solutions that could improve people's lives.
Barack Obama, in a moment that elicited wild applause from the audience, took a jab at Trump's supposed insecurities, suggesting they extended beyond just crowd sizes while glancing down at his hands.
However, Trump was not one to shy away from personal attacks, as his history of using derogatory nicknames and spreading falsehoods about his political rivals demonstrates. Notably, he recently referred to vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris as "Comrade Kamala," insinuating that she is a Marxist.
Trump's remarks at the rally also tapped into a conspiracy theory he has perpetuated over the years, insinuating that Obama's middle name, Hussein, suggests a secret Muslim identity.
Trump's personal attacks were not limited to the Obamas alone. He took aim at President Joe Biden, who had criticized him for putting himself before America, by mocking Biden's choice of vacation destination in Southern California. "People don't want to see you in a bathing suit," Trump taunted.
As the political landscape becomes increasingly contentious, both Democrats and Republicans are engaging in personal attacks and abandoning political politesse. The personal barbs exchanged between Trump and the Obamas serve as a testament to this trend, leaving little room for policy discussions and solutions to pressing issues.
The clash between political opponents is set to intensify as the 2020 presidential campaign gains momentum, leaving voters to decide whether this acrimonious tone is the new normal in American politics.
