Late-night television host Jimmy Kimmel found himself at the receiving end of another tirade from former President Donald Trump on Wednesday. Trump took to social media to attack Kimmel, citing an Oscars mishap that Kimmel was falsely accused of.
In his tweet, Trump called Kimmel "stupid" and criticized his performance as the host of the Academy Awards in March. He specifically targeted a moment when Kimmel allegedly read aloud Trump's mid-show social media post criticizing his hosting skills. Trump claimed that Kimmel stumbled through announcing the "Picture of the Year" award, labeling it as a "classic choke" and one of the biggest in show business history.
However, the facts reveal a different story. Contrary to Trump's claims, it was not Kimmel who had the mishap during the Oscars. The person in question was legendary actor Al Pacino, whom Kimmel had introduced. Pacino's announcement of the Best Picture award for "Oppenheimer" had an unusual and abrupt delivery. Trump wrongly attributed this error to Kimmel.
Furthermore, Trump claimed that Kimmel neglected to say the famous line "AND THE WINNER IS," but this was not the case. The current standard phrase used during the Oscars announcement is "and the Oscar goes to," not "and the winner is," as Trump suggested. The change in wording occurred in 1989 and is well-known within the film industry.
As the presidential campaigns continue to heat up, both Trump and President Joe Biden's teams have been taking jabs at each other's verbal slip-ups. In this instance, the Biden campaign seized the opportunity to mock Trump on social media for his false accusation against Kimmel.
It remains unclear why Trump targeted Kimmel in this Twitter rant, but given the history between the two, it comes as no surprise. Trump's attacks on various media personalities, including Kimmel, have been a recurring theme throughout his presidency and even as a former president.
As the 2024 presidential race looms on the horizon, it is anticipated that such exchanges between Trump and his potential opponents will become more frequent. The use of social media as a platform for political feuds continues to be a prevalent trend among politicians, providing an interesting glimpse into the evolving landscape of American politics.
