### Trump Announces Doubling of Steel Tariffs in Pennsylvania Rally
In a fiery rally at a US Steel plant near Pittsburgh, former President Donald Trump revealed a significant policy change: the tariff on imported steel will be raised from 25% to 50%. Speaking to a crowd of enthusiastic steelworkers, Trump emphasized that the move will further fortify the American steel industry. "We are going to be imposing a 25% increase. We're going to bring it from 25% to 50% the tariffs on steel into the United States of America, which will even further secure the steel industry in the United States," Trump declared.
During the event, which had the hallmarks of a campaign rally despite Trump being ineligible to run for the presidency again, he was presented with a Pittsburgh Steelers jersey by former Steeler Rocky Bleier. The jersey emblazoned with Trump's name and the number 47 prompted Bleier to comment that a jersey with that number is in the National Football League Hall of Fame. However, he did not mention that the jersey belonged to Mel Blount, a former teammate and hall-of-famer who is not a Trump supporter and who endorsed Kamala Harris in her campaign against Trump.
The rally also focused on the recent $14.9 billion sale of US Steel to Japan's Nippon Steel, which Trump framed as a "partnership." This stands in stark contrast to his previous stance last year when he was "totally against" the acquisition. Trump assured the crowd that US Steel would "stay an American company" despite the deal. Notably, Trump's predecessor, Joe Biden, had blocked the acquisition citing national security concerns.
While the specific terms of this new deal remain vague, it's clear that Trump's opinion on the matter has evolved. Last year, he raised concerns about foreign entities stripping America of its wealth. But now, he celebrates the partnership, highlighting changing dynamics within the administration and the steel industry at large.
Throughout his speech, Trump mentioned his authority to raise tariffs under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act, a national security provision. This comes despite a recent court ruling stating that Trump does not have the authority to impose tariffs at will.
In sum, the rally was a complex blend of policy announcements, personal gestures, and shifting viewpoints that underscored Trump's ongoing influence in American politics and industry.
