Former President Donald Trump took aim at former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama for their speeches at the Democratic National Convention, branding them as "nasty." Speaking at a rally in Arizona on Friday, Trump expressed his displeasure towards the Obamas' remarks and ribbed his advisers for suggesting that he focus on policy instead of personal attacks.

In his address, Trump referenced the speeches delivered earlier in the week by the Obamas, stating, "He was nasty to me. He was nasty. Michelle was nasty. They're all nasty." The former president's comments showcased the ongoing personal animosity between him and the Obamas, fueled in part by Trump's past endorsement of the false conspiracy theory regarding Barack Obama's birthplace.

Notably, Trump also directed his criticism towards Vice President Kamala Harris, his opponent in the upcoming election. He mocked her for repeatedly thanking the crowd during her acceptance speech on Thursday night and criticized her for frequently attacking him. Trump's supporters at the rally echoed his sentiment, with the former president sharing statements from his advisers who advocate for him to focus on policy matters rather than engaging in personal attacks.

"I call them up, my geniuses, they get paid a fortune," Trump said, referring to his advisers. "Actually, not that much. I say, 'They're knocking the hell out of me, and you say I shouldn't get personal. I have to get personal. They get personal.'" The former president highlighted the perceived double standard in which he is expected to adhere to a policy-focused approach while his critics are free to launch personal attacks against him.

Despite his advisers and allies publicly urging him to prioritize policy discussions, Trump openly questioned whether he should continue with personal attacks on Harris, as she has gained ground in the polls since becoming the Democratic nominee. The former president's dilemma showcases the ongoing tension between focusing on issues that matter to voters and engaging in personal attacks, a strategy that has characterized his political style.

The clash between Trump and the Obamas stretches beyond political disagreements, with the former president openly pushing false narratives about Obama's birthplace. Michelle Obama, whilst making a rare public and political appearance at the DNC, slammed Trump as someone who has benefited from generational wealth and lacks an understanding of hard work. Meanwhile, Barack Obama likened Trump to an annoying neighbor with a leaf blower and accused him of prioritizing self-interest over serving the nation.

As the election campaign continues to intensify, it remains to be seen whether Trump will heed the advice of his advisers and shift his focus more towards policy matters. The ongoing war of words between the former president and his Democratic rivals underscores the deeply divisive and personal nature of American politics.
