**Trump Campaign Seeks Enhanced Military Security Amid Rising Threats**
The campaign for former President Donald Trump has made formal requests for military assets to bolster his security in the lead-up to the upcoming election, CBS News has learned from reliable sources. Recently, the Trump campaign approached the White House and the Secret Service via emails to secure a military aircraft for travel and to implement expanded flight restrictions over Trump’s residences and campaign events. These measures come as a response to increased threats against his life.
This move follows reports of two assassination attempts targeting Trump since July, with one involving an alleged murder-for-hire plot that includes a Pakistani individual with connections to Iran. These threats are believed to be partly in retaliation for the drone strike in 2020 that killed Iranian Maj. Gen. Qasem Soleimani, during Trump’s administration.
President Joe Biden responded on Friday, indicating support for enhancing Trump's campaign security. During a briefing at the White House, Biden stated he had instructed relevant departments to provide Trump with comprehensive protective measures, though he humorously noted, "as long as he doesn’t ask for F-15s."
According to sources, the enhanced security for Trump would include measures already in place like the use of ballistic glass, but such requests mark a significant deviation from past norms. Historically, no presidential nominee or former president has benefitted from military transportation before an election.
In light of the second attempt against Trump’s life, Biden recently signed bipartisan legislation that strengthens Secret Service protection for major presidential and vice-presidential candidates. This new law mandates that the protection standards applied to the sitting president and vice president also be extended to major candidates.
Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesperson for the Secret Service, reassured that Trump is "receiving the highest levels of protection." Guglielmi outlined the ongoing assistance from the Department of Defense, which includes explosive ordnance disposal, canine units, airlift transportation, and various technical security assets like unmanned aerial vehicles and counter-surveillance systems.
Guglielmi emphasized that the Secret Service will continue to adapt and enhance its protective measures to counter evolving threats, ensuring the former president's safety during this critical period.
