In anticipation of soaring temperatures in Las Vegas, the Trump campaign is taking extra precautions to ensure the safety and comfort of supporters attending the outdoor rally on Sunday. With temperatures expected to exceed 100F (38C), organizers are hiring additional medics, providing water bottles and fans, and allowing attendees to bring umbrellas to shield themselves from the sun.
This rally marks Donald Trump's second public appearance since the hush-money scandal that resulted in his historic conviction as the first US president to face such charges. Despite this setback, the conviction has sparked a surge in fundraising for Trump, energizing his loyal supporters. However, the impact on swing voters remains uncertain.
Although temperatures in the southwest have slightly cooled from historic highs of late, they still remain above normal for this time of year. As Trump is scheduled to speak around noon, the temperature is expected to exceed 100F. The rally will take place at a park near the airport, offering little shade.
To combat the heat, campaign organizers have arranged for ample water bottles to be distributed to attendees. Cooling tents will also be strategically placed throughout the venue, and misting fans will be handed out to provide relief from the scorching weather. Furthermore, the campaign has hired additional emergency medical services in case of any heat-related emergencies.
Surprisingly, the US Secret Service has made an exception and will allow individuals to bring personal water bottles and umbrellas into the event. This exception aims to ensure that supporters can stay hydrated and shield themselves from the intense sun.
The need for these precautions was highlighted during a recent Trump rally in Arizona, where 11 people were transported to hospitals and treated for heat exhaustion. Trump's supporters had waited for hours in line, with some unable to gain entry as the venue reached its capacity. The temperature that day reached a record-breaking 113F (45C).
This rally in Nevada marks Trump's third appearance in the state this year. Nevada was a battleground state where Hillary Clinton emerged victorious in 2016, but Trump performed better against Joe Biden than he did against Clinton in 2020. Moreover, in the recent 2022 midterms, Nevada's Democratic governor, Steve Sisolak, was the only incumbent governor who failed to secure re-election.
Trump's hope of winning Nevada lies in his strength among working-class voters and a growing interest from Latino communities. As the rally approaches and with the excessive heat in mind, the Trump campaign aims to rally his base and secure support in this highly contested state.
