In a letter to U.S. Secret Service Director Kim Cheatle, the Trump campaign has expressed concern over what they call a "critical flaw" in the security perimeter for the upcoming Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. The campaign argues that attendees' safety is at risk due to the planned presence of protesters in the area.

Scheduled for July 15-18, the convention's security perimeter currently includes Pere Marquette, a nearby city-owned park. However, there are worries that if the park is not secured, it could serve as a gathering point for protesters and potentially compromise the safety of convention attendees.

In an attempt to address these concerns, the Trump campaign has requested a one-block adjustment to create a buffer zone between the convention facilities and designated protest areas. The campaign claims that the Secret Service has been unresponsive to their proposal.

GOP congressional lawmakers, including Speaker Mike Johnson, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Sen. Ron Johnson, and Sen. Rick Scott, have also made attempts to meet with Secret Service and RNC leaders to discuss safety and security at the convention in light of the planned protests.

Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesman for the Secret Service, clarified that the designation of demonstration zones is the responsibility of the host city and not the agency. Guglielmi emphasized that the Secret Service takes security planning for such events very seriously, basing their decisions on public safety metrics, risk assessments, and threat evaluations.

The Trump campaign, however, argues that the adjustment to the security perimeter would strike a balance between security and public safety. They believe it would allow attendees, journalists, and community members to move safely and protect their First Amendment rights, including the right to peaceful protest within sight and sound of the convention.

The city of Milwaukee has stated that it has not identified any critical flaws in the security plan and is working closely with multiple agencies to ensure a high-level security arrangement for the convention.

With less than two months remaining before the convention, which is expected to draw over 50,000 attendees and thousands of protesters, the Trump campaign is urging the Secret Service to address their concerns promptly.

It remains to be seen how the Secret Service will respond to the Trump campaign's demand for the adjustment of the security perimeter. The upcoming convention is set to be a significant event in the Republican Party's calendar, and ensuring the safety of all participants will be crucial.
