### Trump and Xi Jinping Hold Significant Call Amid Trade Tensions

President Donald Trump has announced plans for a visit to China following a telephone conversation with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. The discussion, described by Trump as "very good," marks the first direct communication between the two since the onset of the US-China trade war this February.

Trump revealed the mutual exchange of invitations with Xi, although official confirmations from both sides are still pending. "He invited me to China and I invited him here," Trump mentioned during a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at the Oval Office. "We both accepted," he added, noting his intention to travel with the First Lady.

The hour-and-a-half conversation primarily focused on trade issues and concluded positively for both countries, according to Trump. Chinese state media reported that the call was facilitated at the request of the White House. During the call, Xi emphasized the importance of the United States withdrawing negative measures against China, referring to recent sanctions and restrictions.

This call comes against the backdrop of a trade war that saw both countries impose escalating tariffs, which peaked at 145%. A tentative agreement in May reduced some tariffs, setting a 90-day deadline to finalize a trade deal. However, progress has stalled, with both nations accusing each other of breaching the terms.

Trump accused China of not resuming critical mineral shipments vital to various industries, while China objected to new US-imposed restrictions on semiconductor design software and visas for Chinese students. Xi also urged the US to handle the Taiwan issue cautiously to avoid escalating tensions, highlighting the potential for conflict given recent remarks by US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth on China's imminent threat to Taiwan.

As the leaders reconnect to address ongoing disputes, the international community watches closely for developments that could either mend or further strain US-China relations.
