A Florida judge revealed on Wednesday that the driver of a truck involved in a fatal collision with a bus carrying farmworkers had been in another crash just three days earlier. The incident resulted in the death of eight people and led to the driver, Bryan Maclean Howard, facing eight counts of driving under the influence-manslaughter.

During the court hearing, Marion County Judge LeAnn Mackey-Barnes ordered Howard to be held without bail until his next court appearance on June 18. The judge cited Howard's previous driving history, including leaving the scene of an accident, as reasons for remanding him into custody.

According to an arrest report obtained by NBC News affiliate WESH 2 in Orlando, troopers revealed that Howard claimed to have been "driving very carefully" on the day of the crash due to his involvement in another accident three days prior. In the previous incident, Howard reportedly crashed his mother's car into a tree.

The tragic collision occurred in Marion County, approximately 80 miles north of Orlando, early on Tuesday morning. Alongside the eight fatalities, 40 others were hospitalized, with eight of them in critical condition. All of the victims were Mexican farmworkers who held temporary H-2A visas for agricultural work, as confirmed by the Mexican foreign secretary.

The bus, carrying around 50 passengers, was en route to Cannon Farms, a family-owned agricultural business in Dunnellon, according to the Highway Patrol. The devastating crash has raised concerns about the safety of transportation for farmworkers.

During the court appearance, Howard appeared wearing a jail smock, and his head was bandaged. He held onto his shoulder or arms throughout the proceedings. Howard, who claimed to earn $1,200 per month from infrequent construction work and had only $100 in the bank, was granted a public defender.

As the investigation into the crash continues, this tragic incident has highlighted the need for stricter regulations and enforcement to ensure the safety of both farmworkers and other road users.
