In a devastating turn of events, three people lost their lives in a series of horrific crashes on Interstate 25 in south Colorado Springs early Sunday morning. The chain of events began at approximately 4:45 am, when authorities received reports of a driver traveling in the wrong direction on northbound I-25.

While police were responding to this alarming call, several additional 911 calls came in, notifying them of a head-on collision near the MLK Bypass exit (139). Tragically, one of the deceased was a compassionate Good Samaritan who had stopped at the scene to provide aid to the initial crash victims. However, while attempting to cross the interstate, the Samaritan was struck and killed by another northbound vehicle.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing numerous vehicles stopped with hazard lights on as the Samaritan tried to navigate the chaotic scene. Yet, the oncoming vehicle failed to slow down and collided with them. It is important to note that these details have not yet been confirmed by the police.

According to the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD), the other two victims were directly involved in the wrong-way crash. Both the pedestrian and one of the drivers were pronounced dead at the scene, while the wrong-way driver, despite being transported to the hospital, succumbed to their injuries upon arrival.

The crash resulted in significant traffic congestion, prompting the closure of northbound I-25. It wasn't until around 10 a.m. that the road was reopened to motorists.

Initially, officials reported the crash occurred at I-25 and Circle; however, updated information from our crew at the scene confirms that the accident took place closer to the MLK Bypass.

The Colorado Springs community is left mourning the loss of three lives, including that of a brave Good Samaritan who selflessly sought to assist others in need. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crashes are ongoing, and further information will be released as it becomes available.
