In Lexington, Mississippi, a joyous homecoming celebration turned fatal early Saturday. Three people lost their lives and eight others were injured when gunmen opened fire into a large group of revelers. The shooting occurred at an outdoor trail where several hundred individuals gathered to celebrate a school's homecoming football victory, hours after the game had concluded.
Holmes County Sheriff Willie March reported that the violence was triggered by a fight among some men at the event, although the motive behind the altercation remains unclear. The celebration, attended by 200 to 300 people, quickly descended into chaos when the gunfire erupted, causing a mass panic as attendees frantically fled the scene.
"It was chaos, to tell you the truth," Sheriff March described. "The shooting just started and people started running."
The incident took place approximately five miles outside Lexington, Mississippi, following a homecoming football game at Holmes County Consolidated School. The celebratory mood quickly turned somber as the tragic events unfolded.
Two of the deceased victims were 19 years old, while the third was 25 years old. The injured were promptly airlifted to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.
Lexington is situated over 60 miles north of Jackson, and the community is now grappling with the devastating aftermath of this senseless act of violence.
