In a devastating incident that occurred on Saturday evening, a shooting at a family gathering in Chicago resulted in the death of a 7-year-old child and left seven others, including children and adults, injured. The incident took place in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, in the 2000 block of 52nd Street, west of Damen Avenue.

Chicago Police Deputy Chief Don Jerome revealed that officers quickly responded to a shot spotter alert which detected the sound of 18 rounds fired in the area around 9:30 p.m. Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered multiple individuals had been shot on the block. Immediate life-saving measures were implemented, including the use of tourniquets and chest seals.

Tragically, a 7-year-old girl, who had been shot in the head, was pronounced dead. Two other children, a 1-year-old boy and a 7-year-old boy, sustained multiple gunshot wounds and were rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Additionally, five adults, ranging in age from 19 to 40 years old, were injured and transported to local hospitals by the Chicago Fire Department. At this time, their conditions remain unknown.

Deputy Chief Jerome expressed his dismay, stating, "Regardless of the motivation for this incident, three innocent children were struck tonight, and one of them tragically succumbed to her wounds." He extended gratitude to the Chicago Fire Department for their invaluable assistance at the scene, describing the situation as "horrific" and "unacceptable."

Authorities have determined that the shooting was not a random act of violence, but rather likely gang-related. While no suspects are currently in custody, witnesses informed the police that they believe there were two shooters who were on foot. Chicago Police are urging anyone with information about the incident or the suspects to contact CPD's Area One detectives or their local police department.

As investigations continue into this tragic incident, the community remains in shock and mourning for the loss of a young life and the injuries sustained by others during what should have been a peaceful family gathering.
