WOODLAND HILLS, Calif. - A horrifying murder-suicide that unfolded across Woodland Hills and Redondo Beach has left a couple and their infant daughter dead, with a 9-year-old girl surviving as the family's sole survivor. Investigators are diligently searching for answers regarding the tragic events that transpired over the course of several hours earlier this week.
The distressing incident started in the middle of the night when neighbors of 34-year-old Danielle Cherakiyah Johnson and 29-year-old Jaelen Chaney heard a loud argument coming from the couple's Woodland Hills apartment. Authorities suspect Johnson of fatally stabbing Chaney, her live-in boyfriend, before fleeing with her two young daughters in a dark-colored Porsche Cayenne. As she drove away in the SUV, Johnson forcefully rammed the garage gate of the apartment building.
Sources have revealed that the 9-year-old girl witnessed this shocking act of violence, heightening the horror of the situation. Johnson and the children were later on the 405 Freeway in the Westchester area when she abruptly slowed down the moving vehicle, opened the passenger door, and demanded her daughter to exit. When the daughter didn't comply, Johnson forcibly pushed her out of the SUV, still inside the moving car, while the 9-year-old was holding her 8-month-old baby sibling, according to Los Angeles Police Department Lt. Guy Nolan.
Tragically, the infant fell onto the highway pavement and was fatally struck by a passing vehicle. Good Samaritans discovered the children and promptly dialed 911. Emergency responders were unable to save the baby and pronounced her dead at the scene, while the surviving older sister was rushed to the hospital. Consequently, the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services has taken custody of the 9-year-old.
After forcing her children out of the car, Johnson reportedly continued south towards Redondo Beach at speeds exceeding 100 mph. Her reckless driving came to a devastating end when the SUV crashed into a tree at an intersection, and Johnson was pronounced dead upon arrival.
A neighbor living in the same building as Chaney and Johnson, a 26-year-old woman, discovered a gruesome scene upon entering their apartment. She described the sight of their open door, blood on the floor, a trail leading to the elevator, and bloodstains on the walls. Her father promptly contacted the authorities and, under their guidance, entered to find Chaney's lifeless body face-down on the floor, surrounded by a significant amount of blood.
As the investigation continues, authorities are searching for clues to comprehend the motive behind these horrific incidents. "The only witness we have for this crime now is the 9-year-old girl," said Lt. Guy Nolan. "There's just very little information we have, other than: there was a verbal altercation that turned violent and it ended in tragedy."
This heartbreaking murder-suicide has shocked the Woodland Hills and Redondo Beach communities, leaving them seeking answers and mourning the loss of the victims.
