In a devastating incident that took place on Saturday evening, a mass shooting at a privately owned nightclub located at 3400 27th Street N in Birmingham, Alabama, has resulted in the untimely deaths of four individuals. The Birmingham Police Department has now released the identities of the victims, shedding light on the immense tragedy that unfolded.
The shooting occurred around 11:08 p.m., prompting the dispatch of North Precinct officers in response to multiple reports of people being shot. Upon arrival, officers discovered numerous individuals with gunshot wounds both inside and outside the nightclub. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Services (BFRS) also swiftly responded, tragically pronouncing Stevie McGhee, aged 39, dead shortly after finding him on a sidewalk outside the building.
Tragically, two women were also among the victims. Markeisha Gettings, aged 42, and Angela Weatherspoon, aged 56, were found lifeless inside the nightclub. BFRS determined that their injuries were fatal. As the police presence intensified, additional gunshot victims were transported to UAB Hospital, either by BFRS personnel or in personal vehicles. Unfortunately, Lerandus Anderson, aged 24, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead by hospital staff.
At present, nine individuals are receiving medical treatment for gunshot wounds at UAB Hospital, with their conditions ranging from stable to critical, according to Officer Truman Fitzgerald. The preliminary investigation suggests that the shooting may have stemmed from an altercation that occurred inside the nightclub during a birthday party. However, the exact timeline and details of the incident are still under investigation.
Authorities are working diligently to determine if the shooting was directly connected to the altercation. In their effort to bring justice, federal partners have joined the investigation, assisting the Birmingham Police Department. As of now, no suspects are in custody in connection with the tragic event.
This horrifying incident marks the second mass shooting in less than six hours in Birmingham on that fateful Saturday evening. Earlier that day, three individuals were killed in a shooting on Indian Summer Drive, adding to the collective grief and concern within the community.
