In a devastating turn of events, the Houston Area Women's Center (HAWC) released a statement after a Rice University student was killed in an apparent murder-suicide. Andrea, a beloved member of the Rice community, was described by her family as a loving, caring, and intelligent individual who touched the lives of everyone she met.

Having transferred to Rice University in the spring of 2024, Andrea pursued a major in political science, pre-law, driven by her aspiration to make a difference through her career at the United Nations. Hailing from Honduras and having lived in Spain and Maryland before settling in Houston, Andrea was an active participant in various school activities during her time at the Community College of Baltimore County.

At Rice University, Andrea continued to excel as a student and became involved in numerous leadership roles and organizations. She served as a deputy parliamentarian of the Rice Student Association, a peer academic advisor at Jones College, and a member of the university's Honor Council. Andrea's family proudly mentioned her linguistic abilities and the numerous accolades she received throughout her academic journey.

However, Andrea's family adamantly refuted reports suggesting any personal relationship between Andrea and the gunman, underscoring the tragedy as an act of senseless violence committed by a single individual. They have requested privacy as they mourn the loss of their beloved daughter, big sister, niece, cousin, and friend.

Expressing their deep grief, Andrea's family emphasized that her life was one that brought inspiration and kindness to those around her. Their hope amidst this tragedy is that Andrea's memory will serve as a reminder to care for others and foster compassion. They encourage her fellow students and friends to celebrate her life by continuing to support one another.

As grieving parents, Andrea's family also extends a plea to other parents, urging them to maintain open lines of communication with their children and remain vigilant in addressing any concerns they may have regarding relationships.

The loss of Andrea's life has sent shockwaves through the Rice University community and beyond. As the university mourns this profound loss, it is a solemn reminder of the need for continued efforts to address violence and promote the safety and well-being of students.

Andrea's life, tragically cut short, was filled with promise, ambition, and a genuine desire to make a positive impact on the world. As the Rice University community grapples with this heart-wrenching loss, they stand united in honoring Andrea's memory and supporting her grieving family during this unimaginably difficult time.
