### Devastating Floods in New Mexico: Two Dead, Hundreds Rescued
Roswell, N.M.—Heavy rainfall led to unprecedented flooding in eastern New Mexico over the weekend, claiming the lives of two individuals and necessitating the rescue of hundreds more. The city of Roswell experienced an extraordinary deluge, receiving nearly a third of its annual rainfall within just a few hours on Sunday.
Emergency crews continued their search and rescue operations into Sunday morning, as weather forecasts predicted further storms that could bring additional flooding, large hail, and possibly tornadoes. As rescue teams worked tirelessly overnight, officials reported nearly 300 people had been rescued and 38 individuals were transported to local hospitals for treatment.
General Miguel Aguilar of the New Mexico National Guard noted the extent and intensity of emergency efforts in a statement Sunday morning. Utilizing tactical vehicles and swift water rescue teams, the National Guard played a crucial role in the rescues.
New Mexico State Police spokeswoman, Amanda Richards, confirmed the two fatalities but did not release details about the victims or the circumstances surrounding their deaths. Authorities closed all routes into and out of Roswell early on Sunday, with road closures continuing throughout the afternoon for safety reasons.
To assist those displaced by the floods, officials set up a shelter at the Eastern New Mexico Fairgrounds. The community remains on high alert as they brace for potential further weather-related challenges in the coming days.
