In a devastating incident last week, a 31-year-old man named Keith Bychinski from Earlham tragically drowned in a pond, as confirmed by the Waukee police on Monday. The incident occurred on August 8th, when the Waukee Fire Department received a distress call around 3:30 p.m. regarding Bychinski struggling in a body of water located in the 2500 block of Grand Prairie Parkway in Waukee.
According to officials present at the scene, two young individuals were fishing at the city-owned ponds when one of them accidentally lost their fishing pole in the water. Displaying a kind-hearted nature, Bychinski willingly offered to retrieve it from the depths of the pond. However, upon entering the water, he quickly encountered difficulties and started yelling for help.
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the youths promptly dialed 911 and guided the first responders to the location. Despite their valiant efforts, Bychinski's body could not be recovered until later that afternoon.
"The Waukee Fire Department and the Waukee Police Department extend our deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Bychinski," Chief Chad McCluskey expressed in a news release. "Additionally, our thoughts are with the two young men who witnessed this horrific accident."
To provide support during this devastating time, the Police Department's crisis intervention team and police chaplain have reached out to the families of the two youths who were present during the incident.
This tragic drowning serves as a harrowing reminder of the dangers that bodies of water can pose, even to those offering assistance. Authorities continue to stress the importance of maintaining caution and seeking proper assistance when faced with similar situations.
