Tragedy Strikes as Bounce House Lifts in the Air, Killing Child at Baseball Game

In a devastating incident at a baseball game on Friday night, a 5-year-old boy lost his life and another child was injured when a strong gust of wind lifted a bounce house they were playing in, causing it to soar 15 to 20 feet into the air. The incident occurred at Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf, Maryland, during a match between the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs and the York Revolution, both teams part of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball.

At approximately 9:21 p.m., officials at the stadium immediately called 911 after witnessing the sudden lift of the bounce house in the right field stands. The violent motion caused the children to fall from the structure before it ultimately landed on the field. Prompt action was taken by EMS crews who were already present at the stadium, as well as trainers from the baseball team, and several volunteer first responders who were attending the game. Despite their swift efforts, the 5-year-old victim from La Plata, Maryland, sadly could not be saved and was pronounced dead later that evening at Children's Hospital.

Another child also sustained injuries during the incident and was airlifted to a hospital for treatment. Thankfully, their injuries were determined to be non-life-threatening, offering a glimmer of hope amidst the tragedy.

In response to the heartbreaking occurrence, Reuben B. Collins, the Charles County Government Commissioner President, expressed his deepest sympathy to the affected children and their families, acknowledging the swift actions of the EMS team and the Maryland State Police in providing immediate care.

As a result of the incident, the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs have made the difficult decision to cancel Saturday's game. In addition, the organization is offering counseling and support to the families, players, and fans who were present at the game, emphasizing their condolences and concern for the grieving family and the injured child.
