At least eight people lost their lives in a tragic incident when a boat carrying dozens of migrants encountered distress in the English Channel near the town of Ambleteuse in northern France. The incident occurred on Saturday just before midnight, prompting French maritime authorities to dispatch a rescue ship to the area. According to a statement from the French maritime authorities responsible for the Channel and the North Sea, medical assistance was provided to 53 migrants on the beach, but unfortunately, eight individuals could not be saved.
Jacques Billant, the Prefect of Pas-de-Calais, revealed that among the survivors were migrants from various countries including Eritrea, Sudan, Syria, Afghanistan, Egypt, and Iran. He further mentioned that six individuals, including a 10-month-old baby suffering from hypothermia, were taken to the hospital for treatment. The survivors of this heartbreaking incident have been taken to the sports hall in Ambleteuse, as stated by the Pas-de-Calais Prefecture.
In response to the devastating news, British Foreign Secretary David Lammy expressed his deep sadness, calling it "awful" and a "further loss of life." This incident comes just two weeks after another tragic event in the English Channel, where a boat carrying migrants tore apart, resulting in the death of 13 individuals.
According to the French maritime authorities, on Saturday alone, coast guard and navy vessels successfully rescued 200 people from the perilous waters in the Pas-de-Calais region. They reported observing 18 attempts of boat departures from France to Britain that day.
The accident has prompted the Boulogne-sur-mer Prosecutor's Office to open an investigation into the incident, seeking to uncover the circumstances that led to such a tragic loss of life.
This year alone, prior to Saturday's incident, at least 43 migrants have died or gone missing while attempting the perilous crossing to the United Kingdom, as reported by the International Organization for Migration. Earlier this year, in the month of January, five individuals lost their lives when their boat faced difficulties in the harsh winter conditions of the English Channel. In April and July, five more migrants tragically died in separate attempts to reach Britain.
The relentless loss of life underscores the ongoing challenges faced by migrants seeking a safer and better life, often risking their lives while undertaking hazardous journeys. It raises concerns about the urgent need for effective measures to address migration and asylum issues, aiming to ensure the safety and well-being of individuals seeking refuge in different parts of the world.
