### Serious Bus Overturn on I-490 Sends 28 to Hospitals, One in Critical Condition
**CHILI, N.Y. -** In a tragic incident early Thursday morning, a tour bus overturned on I-490 westbound, resulting in one person being critically injured and 28 others being transported to local hospitals. The bus, which departed from New York City at approximately midnight, was en route to Niagara Falls and had planned several stops along the Thruway.
The accident occurred near Exit 4 to Chili around 7 a.m. Upon arrival, first responders found the bus lying on its side, with numerous passengers in visible distress. Monroe County Sheriff Todd Baxter highlighted the commendable efforts of multiple semi-truck drivers who assisted in managing the chaotic scene and helping confused passengers, some of whom were wandering in a state of shock along I-490 in the early morning darkness.
The critically injured individual underwent surgery shortly after the accident. All bus passengers have been accounted for, with two requiring extrication from the overturned vehicle. The large-scale response involved 18 ambulances and more than 100 first responders, who efficiently transported passengers to four different hospitals. Baxter credited the coordinated efforts of local hospitals and emergency medical teams for their prompt response.
Nearly every EMT unit in Monroe County, along with New York State Police and multiple fire departments, responded to the scene. Efforts to contact and inform the families of the passengers were promptly initiated, and the Monroe County Sheriff's Office established a liaison line for relatives seeking information.
Westbound lanes between Exit 4 and Exit 3 to Riga remain closed, while eastbound lanes have been reopened. Authorities, including New York State Police and Monroe County sheriff’s deputies, are conducting an ongoing investigation into the crash.
The bus involved in the accident was operated by FlixBus, whose spokesperson stated that their team is working closely with the bus operator and authorities to gather information and assist passengers. It's important to note that FlixBus itself does not operate buses but coordinates with third-party operators.
Local hospitals have been proactive in their response. Rochester General and Unity hospitals, part of Rochester Regional Health, treated several of the bus crash victims. Their statement emphasized their preparedness for such emergencies and assured that resources were effectively allocated to manage the situation.
The University of Rochester Medical Center reported receiving 13 passengers at Strong Memorial Hospital, including one adult who underwent emergency surgery. Evaluations continue for the remaining patients, including a child who fortunately did not sustain serious injuries. Three additional adult patients were taken to Highland Hospital.
Governor Kathy Hochul expressed her concern and gratitude toward first responders, urging travelers to avoid the I-490 area to facilitate ongoing rescue and recovery operations. The state's coordinated response with local authorities underscores their commitment to handling this serious incident with utmost care and efficiency.
