According to a recent survey conducted by New York Times/Siena, former President Trump and Vice President Harris are engaged in a fierce electoral battle across the sunbelt states. The polling data reveals close races in Arizona and North Carolina, with Harris holding a slight lead in both states.
In Arizona, Harris currently enjoys a five-point advantage over Trump, garnering 50% support compared to his 45%. Similarly, in North Carolina, Harris maintains a two-point lead with 49% support, while Trump trails closely behind at 47%. This data is seen as particularly concerning for Republicans, as Trump had been successful in securing victories in North Carolina during both the 2016 and 2020 elections.
However, the survey also brought some positive news for Trump. In Georgia, Trump leads Harris by four points, securing the support of 50% of voters compared to her 46%. Additionally, in Nevada, a state where Trump faced defeat in both 2016 and 2020, he presently holds a one-point lead over Harris, with 48% support compared to her 47%.
The survey, which gathered data from registered voters in Arizona, Georgia, North Carolina, and Nevada, shows that there is still a significant level of voter uncertainty in these races. This sentiment is reflected in the fact that 43% of voters perceive Vice President Harris as "too liberal or progressive," while only 33% hold the same view of Trump as "too conservative."
On the issue front, it appears that voters have differing preferences. A majority of voters in the surveyed states believe that Trump would do a better job on the economy, with a decisive 56% to 41% advantage over Harris. In terms of immigration, Trump also holds the edge, leading Harris by 53% to 43%. However, when it comes to the controversial issue of abortion, Harris enjoys a significant lead with 56% support, compared to Trump's 38%.
Pollster Carly Cooperman expressed the view that these races are extremely close, with Harris not yet definitively winning. However, the results do highlight a potential shift in the electoral landscape, opening up new possibilities for Harris.
The survey also delved into voter sentiments towards candidates on the bottom of the ticket. The data indicates that Senator JD Vance is viewed favorably by 36% of voters, while 45% have an unfavorable view. By contrast, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is viewed favorably by 38% of voters and has a lower unfavorable rating, with only 35%.
The high level of attention on the race is evident, as more than half of the surveyed voters indicated that they were paying "a lot" of attention. This suggests that views are solidifying and the race is intensifying.
In a previous poll, Trump was found to be trailing in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan by four points, indicating that these battleground states will be hotly contested by both candidates in the 2024 elections.
All eyes remain on the sunbelt states as the battle between Trump and Harris continues to unfold, shaping the future of American politics.
