Three more inmates who escaped from the Orleans Justice Center jail have been apprehended, authorities reported on Monday. Lenton VanBuren Jr. was captured in Baton Rouge, according to Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill. Meanwhile, Leo Tate and Jermaine Donald were taken into custody in Walker County, Texas, north of Houston, as confirmed by Louisiana State Police.
These latest arrests leave two escapees, Derrick Groves and Antoine Massey, still on the run following the jailbreak that took place shortly after midnight on May 16. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry lauded the successful captures on social media, praising the efforts of the Louisiana State Police and the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Governor Landry expressed confidence that the remaining fugitives would soon be apprehended, stating, “Antoine and Derrick -- you are NEXT!” A $20,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the capture of each of the two men still at large.
Monday's captures are significant breakthroughs in the multi-state manhunt that had not seen new successes for nearly a week. The apprehension of Corey Boyd last Tuesday in the 1400 block of Iberville marked the fifth escapee's return to custody. In the time since, 11 individuals have been arrested and charged with aiding the escapees.
The Louisiana State Police elaborated that Tate and Donald were caught by agents from the Texas Department of Public Safety. Baton Rouge police, acting on a tip, detained a masked man who was later identified as VanBuren. Authorities are now searching a hotel where VanBuren had been staying.
Attorney General Murrill confirmed VanBuren’s arrest on her Facebook page, underscoring the ongoing efforts and coordination between state and local law enforcement agencies to bring all escapees back to justice.
