In a recent revelation, Jack Black announced that his band, Tenacious D, will be taking a break but assures fans that they will return when the time is right. This announcement comes after a controversial remark made by bandmate Kyle Gass regarding the assassination attempt on former US President Donald Trump.
During the premiere of his new sci-fi film "Borderlands" on Tuesday night, Jack Black spoke with Variety about the tour cancellation and the need for a break. "We need to take a break. Everybody needs a break sometime," he explained. Despite the tour cancellation, Black reassured fans that he and Gass are still friends, stating, "That hasn't changed. These things take time sometimes... And we'll be back when it feels right."
The decision to halt the remaining dates of their tour came after footage from their concert in Sydney, Australia on July 14 caused a significant outcry on social media. In the video, Black presented Gass with a birthday cake and jokingly told him to "make a wish." Gass's response, "Don't miss Trump next time," in reference to the assassination attempt, sparked controversy and led to one Australian lawmaker calling for the band's deportation from the country.
Jack Black expressed his surprise at the remark, stating that he was "blindsided by what was said at the show" in a statement to CNN. In the days that followed, Gass took to Instagram to issue an apology, acknowledging the gravity of his words. He wrote, "The line I improvised onstage Sunday night in Sydney was highly inappropriate, dangerous and a terrible mistake. I don't condone violence of any kind, in any form, against anyone." Gass expressed deep remorse for his lack of judgement, apologizing to those he may have hurt.
As a consequence of his controversial remark, Kyle Gass has been dropped by his Hollywood talent representative, Michael Greene of Greene Talent. Greene confirmed the departure, but refrained from providing further comments on the matter.
While Tenacious D's unexpected break may be disappointing for fans, Jack Black's assurance of their return gives hope for the future. The band's decision to take time off not only allows for reflection but also emphasizes the importance of responsible and thoughtful communication. As Black said, "And we'll be back when it feels right."
