Technical Glitches Plague FAFSA Rollout, Leaving College-Bound Seniors in Limbo

In a botched rollout of an updated version of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), college-bound seniors at Robert M. La Follette High School in Madison, Wisconsin, are facing numerous challenges and delays in submitting their financial aid forms. At La Follette High School, where more than half of the students come from low-income families and over a third speak a language other than English as their first language, the impacts of the FAFSA problems have been significant. While some colleges have extended their decision deadlines, not all have done so, leading to concerns that the FAFSA issues will impact students' college choices. The impact has been particularly felt among mixed-status families, where a student may be documented but one or both parents lack Social Security numbers. A technical glitch initially prevented these families from submitting the FAFSA, and while workarounds were eventually provided, many faced delays in accessing the form until April 30.
La Follette High School has intensified its support services to assist families of college-bound seniors. FAFSA workshops and one-on-one counseling sessions have been offered to guide students through the application process. Partnerships with organizations like the Fair Opportunity Project have also provided virtual FAFSA guidance to students.
The Department of Education has responded to the challenges by increasing support for students applying for financial aid. In early May, they allocated $50 million in grants to organizations assisting students with FAFSA filings. However, the Biden administration still faces criticism for the flawed rollout from lawmakers across party lines.
Nationally, there has been a significant decline in FAFSA submissions compared to last year's class, with a more pronounced impact observed in lower-income schools and those with higher minority populations. La Follette students are experiencing a similar trend, but there has been some improvement in recent weeks as more successful FAFSA submissions have been reported.
The long-term implications of these challenges remain uncertain, with concerns mounting over whether the issues will be resolved in time for next year's FAFSA cycle. The Government Accountability Office has initiated an investigation into the implementation of the new form as requested by some lawmakers.
