In a surprising move, the Teamsters union, led by General President Sean O'Brien, has opted not to endorse a presidential candidate for the upcoming 2028 election. O'Brien expressed disappointment in both major candidates, citing a lack of serious commitments to prioritize the interests of working people over those of big business. This decision marks the first time since 1996 that the Teamsters have refrained from making an endorsement.
Reacting to the union's non-endorsement, Democratic officials have voiced contrasting sentiments. Representative Jim McGovern of Massachusetts criticized former President Trump as the "most anti-labor president" in history, highlighting what he described as Trump's allegiance to wealthy individuals over the working class. McGovern's comments underscore a broader divide within the political landscape regarding labor rights and advocacy.
On the Democratic side, Representative Steven Horsford of Nevada lauded Vice President Kamala Harris for her support of Teamsters pensions, noting her role in protecting these benefits through a tie-breaking Senate vote. Despite the national organization's decision, Nevada's Teamsters councils have independently endorsed Harris, with politicians like Horsford and Senator Catherine Cortez-Masto emphasizing Harris' dedication to union workers. In contrast, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi criticized Trump for his lack of support on pension issues, highlighting the Democratic efforts that ultimately safeguarded Teamsters pensions.
