A growing contingent of Taylor Swift fans, known as Swifties, have thrown their support behind Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming U.S. presidential election. Dedicated social media accounts have emerged, gaining significant followings and advocating for Harris as the Democratic nominee.
The surge of Swiftie support for Harris comes after President Joe Biden announced on Sunday that he would not seek reelection in the 2024 presidential race. Biden, at the same time, endorsed Harris, who has since secured enough delegates to become the presumptive Democratic nominee and potentially face former President Donald Trump in the November election.
One such social media account, a TikTok page called @Swifties4Kamala, has garnered attention with 64,900 followers and over 164,000 likes. While the account is not affiliated with Swift herself, it describes its mission as a "Coalition of Swifties mobilizing to get Dem candidates elected nationwide."
The first post on the TikTok account featured a slideshow detailing the purpose behind the campaign. It emphasized supporting Harris as the next president, highlighting her experience, integrity, wit, and stamina. The campaign also expressed a commitment to progressing the United States towards a flourishing and inclusive future, advocating for dignity and respect for all people, reproductive freedom and choice, and a welcoming attitude towards immigrants.
Building on their social media presence, the movement has expanded to include an X account (formerly Twitter) and an Instagram account, both with the same name. At the time of writing, the X account had 42,400 followers, while the Instagram account had 9,212.
It's worth noting that Taylor Swift has yet to officially endorse a candidate for the upcoming presidential election. However, she publicly demonstrated her support for Harris during the 2020 election cycle. In August 2020, Swift responded positively to Harris' post announcing her nomination as the Democratic vice-presidential candidate. She also shared a photo of herself holding custom cookies decorated with the Biden/Harris campaign logo, a gesture of support for the Democratic ticket.
Swift's political influence is evident, as exclusive polling conducted by Redfield & Wilton Strategies for Newsweek in January revealed that 18 percent of voters felt "more likely" or "significantly more likely" to support a candidate endorsed by the singer. Meanwhile, seventeen percent said they would be less likely to vote for a Swift-backed candidate, and 55 percent claimed it would not affect their voting decision.
While Swift's endorsement of Harris remains uncertain for the upcoming election, her previous statements indicate her alignment with the Democratic agenda. In an interview with V Magazine, Swift expressed her belief that Biden and Harris would bring the much-needed healing process and address issues of racial equality, women's reproductive rights, and LGBTQIA+ rights.
As the election season unfolds, the mobilization of Swifties in support of Harris is an intriguing development, highlighting the potential impact of celebrity endorsements on voter preferences.
