In a recent update to its release slate, video game publisher Take-Two Interactive revealed that it has reduced its total number of upcoming games by 12 titles. The company unveiled its revised release schedule during its earnings report for fiscal year 2024.
According to the presentation slide, Take-Two now plans to release a total of 40 titles by the end of fiscal year 2027, excluding the acquisition of Gearbox. This is a significant drop from the 52 games in development that the company previously announced in February.
Although it has not been explicitly stated that all of the 12 missing games have been cancelled, Take-Two confirmed during its earnings call that some titles had indeed been scrapped. President Karl Slatoff explained that the cancellations were part of the company's cost-reduction program and were aimed at concentrating resources on franchises expected to achieve substantial critical and commercial success.
Slatoff emphasized that the cancelled titles did not include any of Take-Two's core franchises and were not anticipated to have a significant impact on the company's next bookings growth. Chief Financial Officer Lainie Goldstein further supported this statement by highlighting the cost savings that the company's cost-reduction program is expected to generate. The program is estimated to deliver over $155 million in annual savings across the entire business.
In April, Take-Two made headlines by confirming a 5% reduction in its workforce, resulting in approximately 600 job cuts. This announcement included the cancellation of several unnamed game projects that were in development.
It is important to note that while the decrease in the number of upcoming game releases may be disappointing to some, it also highlights Take-Two's strategic decision to prioritize quality over quantity. By focusing on their core franchises and redirecting resources, the publisher aims to maximize the success of its future releases.
As the gaming industry evolves and becomes more competitive, Take-Two's move to streamline its portfolio may prove to be a strategic maneuver for long-term growth and profitability. Players and fans can now look forward to a more focused lineup of games from the publisher in the coming years.
