In the wake of the heated confrontation between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Milwaukee Brewers, Major League Baseball (MLB) has announced several suspensions for the parties involved. Rays manager Kevin Cash confirmed that outfielder Jose Siri's suspension has been reduced to two games, which he has already begun serving.
According to reports, Milwaukee right-handers Freddy Peralta and Abner Uribe have received suspensions of five and six games, respectively. Manager Pat Murphy of the Brewers has been suspended for two games. All four individuals also face undisclosed fines.
Murphy has already started serving his suspension, but both Peralta and Uribe are appealing their suspensions, as confirmed by Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Siri, too, will be appealing his suspension, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.
The incident that led to the suspensions occurred during the game between the Rays and Brewers. Siri hit a home run off Peralta in the third inning and was subsequently hit by a pitch in the sixth. Despite no prior warnings in the game, Peralta was ejected.
Murphy objected to the ejection and was also ejected from the game. In the eighth inning, when Siri faced Uribe on the mound, a confrontation ensued between the two players after a ground ball play at first base. Punches were thrown, and both Siri and Uribe were ejected, causing benches to empty.
After the game, crew chief Chris Guccione stated that the umpires believed Peralta intentionally threw at Siri, although Peralta denied any ill intent. Peralta emphasized that he had never been ejected from a game in his seven-year career and stated, "There's no reason for me to hit him."
Siri countered claims that he celebrated his home run excessively, saying, "I didn't take too much time. I hit the ball, took a couple of steps, and then I started running like normal."
Regarding the incident at first base, Uribe admitted that inappropriate words were exchanged, stating, "There were some words shared that didn't have much to do with the game that probably shouldn't have been shared there in that exchange." Siri explained that Uribe hit him on the shoulder, and when asked about the reason, Uribe simply replied, "Because I felt like it."
As Murphy serves his suspension immediately, Peralta, Uribe, and Siri are awaiting the completion of their appeal process. The suspensions will be held in abeyance until a decision is reached. It is not uncommon for players in this situation to drop an appeal at a convenient time, such as during a scheduled day off.
MLB will closely monitor the appeals process as it works towards resolving the aftermath of the Rays-Brewers confrontation.
