Chicago police have officially named the suspect wanted in connection with the shooting and killing of Officer Luis Huesca last week. Xavier L. Tate Jr., a 22-year-old resident of Aurora, is the subject of an arrest warrant issued on Friday, according to the Chicago Police Department. The shooting, which occurred on April 21 in the Gage Park neighborhood, has prompted a week-long manhunt for Tate, who remains at large.
Tate, now facing a first-degree murder charge, is considered armed and dangerous, as stated by the police. Huesca, driving home in his uniform at the time, was reportedly shot multiple times near his family's residence. Sources have revealed that Huesca was struck nearly 20 times by a firearm believed to have a "switch" attachment, effectively converting it into an automatic weapon.
During the incident, Huesca's vehicle was stolen but was later discovered in close proximity. However, authorities have yet to confirm if the shooting was a result of a carjacking. To aid in Tate's apprehension, the police released a two-minute surveillance video showcasing the suspect's movements outside convenience stores and on the sidewalk.
Further reports indicate that Tate had a prior arrest for criminal trespass to a residence on March 6 in Olympia Fields. He was due to appear in court for that case on Wednesday, according to court documents cited by FOX32. In light of Tate's continued evasion, a combined reward of $100,000 has been announced by Crime Stoppers, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, the FBI, and the Fraternal Order of Police, for any information leading to his arrest and conviction.
Officer Luis Huesca served the Chicago Police Department for six years and would have celebrated his 31st birthday on Tuesday. Authorities urge anyone with information regarding Tate's whereabouts to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-535-7867 or submit anonymous tips at CPDTip.com. The manhunt for Tate continues as law enforcement agencies work tirelessly to bring him to justice and provide closure to Officer Huesca's family and colleagues.
