Los Angeles police have apprehended a suspect in connection with the brutal assaults on two women in separate incidents near the famous Venice canals. Anthony Jones, 29, was taken into custody late Thursday night in San Diego, according to LAPD Cmdr. Steve Lurie.
The attacks occurred on Saturday around 10:30 p.m. in the 2700 block of Strongs Drive, where a woman was approached from behind and struck with a blunt object, rendering her unconscious. Roughly an hour later, the same suspect targeted another woman walking near the Sherman Canal. Both victims suffered significant injuries.
During a news conference, City Councilwoman Traci Park expressed her concerns about the safety of Los Angeles residents and visitors. She criticized the "catch-and-release" policies and "criminals-are-the-victims" mentality that she believes are contributing to the increasing number of unsafe incidents in the city.
Park emphasized the urgent need for public safety, asserting that no individual, whether a woman, visitor, or family member should feel unsafe in any Los Angeles neighborhood. She further emphasized that businesses are being adversely affected, and the reputation of the city is at stake.
Police have revealed that the attacks had a sexual nature to them but have not disclosed the details of how the suspect, Jones, was identified or located. Los Angeles authorities are requesting the community's assistance in providing any information related to the attacks or any additional victims by contacting LAPD Special Assault detectives at (213) 473-0447. Anonymous tips can be submitted through Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477 or lacrimestoppers.org.
Following the attacks, the LAPD has taken immediate action by increasing patrols throughout the Venice area to ensure the safety of residents and visitors. Police have advised the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity or individuals loitering in the vicinity.
Los Angeles continues to face challenges related to public safety, with Councilwoman Traci Park urging a more serious approach towards addressing unstable and potentially dangerous individuals roaming the streets. The recent attacks near the Venice canals have intensified the need for a heightened focus on safeguarding the city's inhabitants.
