In a grim revelation, the United Nations migration agency has reported that the number of internally displaced people in Sudan has surpassed 10 million. This shocking statistic highlights the devastating impact of the ongoing war, which has forced approximately a quarter of Sudan's population from their homes.
According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), more than 2 million Sudanese nationals have been driven to seek refuge in neighboring Chad, South Sudan, and Egypt. Alarmingly, out of the internally displaced, 2.8 million individuals had already fled their homes prior to the current conflict.
Speaking on the severity of the situation, IOM Director-General, Amy Pope, drew a chilling comparison, stating, "Imagine a city the size of London being displaced. That's what it's like, but it's happening with the constant threat of crossfire, with famine, disease, and brutal ethnic and gender-based violence."
The current conflict in Sudan began in April last year, triggered by escalating tensions between military leaders and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The war has ravaged the nation, resulting in the death of over 14,000 people and leaving thousands more injured. Moreover, this brutal conflict has pushed Sudan's population to the brink of famine.
Last month, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) issued a warning to the warring factions, emphasizing a tremendous risk of widespread starvation and death in Sudan's vast western region of Darfur and other affected areas. Urgent humanitarian aid is imperative to avert this humanitarian catastrophe.
Highlighting the pressing need for a unified international effort, Director-General Amy Pope urged the global community to step up its support, as less than one-fifth of the required funds have been delivered by the IOM. With more than a quarter of Sudan's population, roughly 47 million, having either fled as refugees or been internally displaced, the scale of this crisis is staggering.
The situation in Sudan demands immediate action to alleviate the suffering of the displaced population and prevent further loss of life. It is crucial for the international community to rally together and provide the necessary assistance to address this catastrophic humanitarian crisis.
