In a disturbing incident, a 45-year-old substitute teacher at Burke High School in Omaha, Nebraska, has been arrested on charges of sexually assaulting a 17-year-old student. The accused, identified as Erin Ward, was taken into custody by Douglas County deputies on April 13.
The incident unfolded in the early hours of the morning, when deputies responded to a call about a suspicious car parked on a dead-end road near 189th and Blondo streets. Upon arriving at the scene, deputies observed two individuals inside a gray Honda Pilot, one of whom swiftly moved into the driver's seat and sped away towards the north. However, the reckless drive came to an abrupt end when the vehicle crashed into a nearby yard, roughly two blocks away.
The teenage male driver promptly fled the scene on foot, leaving the other occupant behind. The woman, later identified as Erin Ward, was found in the backseat of the car, putting her clothes on as the deputies approached. Ward, who worked as a substitute teacher at Burke High School, allegedly confessed to engaging in sexual relations with the underage student.
Deputies immediately initiated a search for the teenage victim, eventually locating him at approximately 4 a.m. Both the student and Ward were transported to a local hospital to receive treatment for minor injuries sustained during the crash. While authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, Ward has been charged with one count of felony sexual abuse by a school employee.
Reacting to the arrest, Omaha Public Schools issued a statement expressing deep concern over the situation. Darren Rasmussen, the principal of Burke High School, emphasized the priority the school places on the safety and well-being of its students. Rasmussen stated that the accused substitute teacher had only worked at the school for a few days during the 2023-24 academic year and confirmed that Ward would not be returning to any schools within the district.
To address the emotional impact on students, the school has arranged for counselors to be available on Tuesday to provide support. In addition, parents who have concerns or questions regarding the incident have been encouraged to get in touch with Principal Rasmussen.
The arrest of the substitute teacher has shocked the community and serves as a reminder of the need to be vigilant against inappropriate behavior. Omaha Public Schools urged anyone with concerns about such behavior to contact Child Protective Services at 1-800-652-1999 or to reach out to law enforcement.
As the investigation continues, the authorities will work to ensure justice is served and that the well-being of the students involved is fully addressed.
