Former White House chief strategist and longtime Trump ally, Steve Bannon, expressed confidence that former President Donald Trump will secure a resounding victory in the upcoming November election. Bannon shared his optimistic outlook during an interview with "This Week" co-anchor Jonathan Karl, where he also discussed various political matters.
According to Bannon, there is a "100% certainty" that Trump could defeat President Joe Biden by a large margin, leading the Republicans to gain control of the Senate and secure additional seats in the House. Despite serving only seven months in the White House, Bannon has maintained regular contact with Trump and continues to exert influence within the hardcore Trump supporter base.
Notably, Bannon is set to begin serving a four-month prison sentence on Monday after defying a Congressional subpoena regarding his potential involvement in the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. The Supreme Court's recent denial of his request to remain out of prison while appealing his conviction means that Bannon's incarceration will proceed as scheduled.
Through his daily four-hour show, "War Room," which he broadcasts from his Washington, D.C. home, Bannon has maintained a significant influence among Trump supporters. The themes and rhetoric of "War Room" often resonate in Trump's campaign speeches, notably the concept of retribution. Trump has repeatedly expressed his intention to pursue political opponents, with Bannon insisting that investigating individuals such as former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, former FBI Director James Comey, former Defense Secretary Mark Esper, and former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley is necessary for justice, rather than retribution.
When pressed by Karl on whether he would appeal to Trump supporters to accept the results of the 2024 election regardless of the outcome, Bannon evaded the question, sparking concerns about potential violence. Referring to the storming of the Capitol, Karl noted the absence of similar actions by Democrats during previous elections. Bannon responded by suggesting that until the fairness of the election is proven, "all bets are off."
Looking ahead to a potential second Trump administration, Bannon outlined three key areas that he believes should be addressed: sealing the border and implementing mass deportations, addressing the country's financial situation, and putting an end to prolonged military engagements. These areas, or "verticals" as Bannon described them, would be central focuses of Trump's second term.
While Bannon exudes confidence in Trump's chances of reelection, it is worth noting that his previous election predictions have not always materialized. In 2018, Bannon forecasted an "astounding victory" for Republicans, but Democrats ultimately gained 40 seats in the House. Similarly, his prediction of a "massive blowout" for Republicans in 2022 did not come to fruition.
However, Bannon defended his record, emphasizing that the movement he supports is a populist, nationalist revolution that will experience both victories and setbacks throughout its progression.
As the Republican National Convention approaches, where Trump is expected to officially accept the GOP nomination for president, Bannon's predictions and vision for a second Trump administration will undoubtedly fuel further discussion and debate within political circles.
