Sonoma State University President, Mike Lee, has been placed on administrative leave after sending a school-wide email without the proper approval. The email included promises made to student protestors, further intensifying the ongoing pro-Palestinian protests on campus.

Sonoma State University, which is part of the California State University (CSU) system, has been witnessing pro-Palestinian demonstrations in recent weeks, including an encampment on the campus. With the intention of establishing peace with the student protestors, President Mike Lee sent a campus-wide alert, outlining an agreement he had reached with the students. Unfortunately, neither the decisions nor the message had received the necessary approvals from higher authorities within the CSU system.

Mildred Garcia, the CSU Chancellor, condemned Lee's actions as insubordinate for sending the message without appropriate approvals. In response, Lee has been placed on administrative leave while the matter is being actively reviewed by the CSU Board of leadership. Dr. Nathan Evans, the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs and Chief Academic Officer, will serve as the acting president of Sonoma State University during this period.

Garcia expressed her concern regarding the impact the unapproved message has had on the Sonoma State community, acknowledging that it will be challenging and painful for many students and community members. She emphasized that the mission of the CSU is to create an inclusive and welcoming environment for all, rather than marginalizing any particular community.

In the wake of the controversy, President Mike Lee has issued a statement apologizing for his actions. He acknowledged that his attempt to find agreement with one group of students had inadvertently marginalized others within the student population and community. Lee expressed deep regret for the unintended consequences of his actions and took full ownership of them. As he steps away on leave, he intends to reflect on the harm caused and work closely with the Chancellor's Office to determine the next steps.

In the meantime, Dr. Nathan Evans will assume the responsibilities of Acting President of Sonoma State University. Lee has pledged his support to Evans during this transitional period.

The situation at Sonoma State University serves as a reminder of the importance of obtaining proper approvals and considering the broader impact of actions taken by university officials. The CSU system continues to prioritize inclusivity and strives to create a supportive and welcoming environment for all its members.
