Amidst the ongoing pro-Palestinian protests that have dominated U.S. colleges in recent weeks, Jewish students have taken part in strident displays of support for Palestine while remaining hesitant to lead rallies in support of Israel or against perceived displays of antisemitism. However, this may soon change as groups in solidarity with Jewish students plan dozens of rallies in the coming days.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has stirred a wide range of views among Jewish students, with many holding nuanced opinions. Despite deep concerns about the war in Gaza and the resulting backlash on their campuses, some students have shied away from participating in demonstrations. Fervent debates have ensued among Jewish students over whether and how to respond as pro-Palestinian encampments spread from one university to the next. Some have even joined the encampments and celebrated Passover among the tents with fellow protesters.

A key reason behind the hesitation to rally has been the perceived anti-Israel rhetoric, which has left many feeling unsettled and concerned. However, now a wave of support is emerging as groups plan rallies to stand in solidarity with Jewish students and to emphasize that there is room for empathy for both Palestinians and Israelis affected by the war.

Notably, recent rallies at Indiana University Bloomington, George Washington University, and MIT have seen protesters hoisting Israeli flags, demonstrating their support for Israel. At George Washington University in Washington, D.C., approximately 150 people, including many Jewish students, gathered in a grassy courtyard seeking to showcase Jewish pride and unity. Organizer Gabrielle Guigui emphasized the goal of providing a safe space for Jewish students who may be fearful, stating that "a lot of them are scared."

One student, senior Brina Cartagenova, symbolized the changing sentiment by proudly wearing a necklace with her Hebrew name. Previously, she had taken it off due to fears of retaliation on campus.

The upcoming rallies seek to create a sense of unity among Jewish students and bring attention to their concerns amidst the ongoing pro-Palestinian protests. These events aim to demonstrate that it is possible to stand in solidarity with both Palestinians and Israelis affected by the conflict. As tensions continue to escalate, the rallies serve as an opportunity for Jewish students to assert their presence and support for their community.

With dozens of rallies planned in the upcoming days, the focus is shifting towards offering support to Jewish students and generating a sense of inclusivity on college campuses amidst the charged atmosphere that surrounds the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
