In a recent statement posted on the social media platform X, it has been announced that the company will be closing its office in Brazil amidst an ongoing legal dispute with the country's Supreme Court. The disagreement stems from an alleged secret order to remove certain posts from the site in Brazil, leading X to make the difficult decision to shut down its operations in the country.

CEO Elon Musk took to X to express his concerns over the situation, stating that complying with the "illegal" censorship and data handover demands from Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes would have been against the principles of the company. X even posted a screenshot of the order from Justice Moraes, who has been investigating digital militias accused of spreading fake news and hate messages during the former government of President Jair Bolsanaro.

Under the alleged order, Moraes threatened X with a daily fine of $3,650 and an arrest decree against X representative Rachel Nova Conceicao if the platform failed to comply. X publicly shared the order on their platform as a way to shed light on the actions of Justice Moraes, expressing their frustration with the lack of appeals being heard and the absence of transparency surrounding the orders.

X emphasized that the responsibility for the company's decision to close their Brazil office lies solely with Alexandre de Moraes, stating that they are deeply saddened to have been forced into this course of action. Earlier this year, Moraes directed X to block certain accounts, which the platform initially complied with. However, Musk later announced plans to reactivate these accounts, calling Moraes's decision "unconstitutional."

In response to Musk's statements, X representatives eventually reversed their position and informed Brazil's Supreme Court of their intention to comply with the legal rulings. The Supreme Court declined to comment on the allegations made by X and did not confirm the authenticity of the image shared by the social media company.

As the decision was made to close X's Brazil operations, Musk also voiced his opinion on justice Moraes, calling for his departure. He stated that having a justice who repeatedly violates the law undermines the concept of justice itself. This led to a response from right-wing politician Nikolas Ferreira, who invited Musk to join a protest demanding the impeachment of Alexandre de Moraes on September 7th in São Paulo.

Although X users in Brazil will still be able to access the social media site, the closure of the company's office highlights the escalating tensions between the platform and the Brazilian Supreme Court. As the legal battle wages on, the repercussions of this decision are yet to be seen.
