In Hatboro, Pennsylvania, Lochel's Bakery has found a delicious way to add some extra sweetness and competition to the upcoming presidential election. The bakery, located in a crucial swing state, has introduced red Trump cookies and blue Harris cookies to track sales and gauge support for each candidate. Customers from across the country are placing orders to express their allegiance, making Lochel's Bakery a hot spot for political goodies.
Since the start of this cookie competition, Lochel's Bakery has seen impressive numbers. As of Friday morning, the shop has sold a whopping 5,200 Trump cookies, while only 500 Harris cookies have been purchased. Owner Kathleen Lochel expressed her observation that people all over the country show support for Trump. She also shared that many of her customers are expressing concerns about the rising costs under the Biden-Harris administration, which has them looking for an outlet to vent their frustrations.
Aside from the political aspect, Lochel's Bakery is facing its own challenges due to skyrocketing grocery prices. The shop has managed to maintain stable prices for almost three years on most items, but the current situation is becoming unsustainable. Lochel's husband has expressed concerns about the increasing costs and the strain it puts on their operations. However, despite these difficulties, the bakery is committed to serving all their customers, regardless of their political opinions.
Interestingly, Lochel credited the cookie competition for saving their business during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. When faced with the possibility of closing the bakery, Kathleen Lochel and her employees decided to continue making the popular red and blue cookies. These treats not only served as a source of income but also brought unexpected attention when Eric Trump visited the shop to purchase the cookies, giving them a much-needed boost during uncertain times.
The popularity of Lochel's Bakery has extended beyond Pennsylvania, with one-third of their cookies being shipped to customers in other states. However, the majority of those shipped within the battleground state have been red Trump cookies, with only seven packages of blue Harris cookies sent to Pennsylvania. This trend aligns with the informal poll conducted by the bakery since 2012, where they have successfully predicted the outcome of three out of the last four elections. However, in 2020, the winning streak ended as the sales of 31,804 Trump cookies outnumbered the 5,750 Biden cookies.
While the bakery takes pride in its cookie competition, they want to emphasize that it is all in good fun. In a recent social media post, they reminded everyone to "Keep calm... it's a cookie." Lochel's Bakery understands that politics can be a sensitive subject, and they strive to maintain a lighthearted atmosphere for their customers to enjoy.
As the November election approaches, Lochel's Bakery continues to serve up their delicious politically-themed cookies, providing a unique way for customers to show their support. Whether it's through a red Trump cookie or a blue Harris cookie, these treats have become a symbol of political engagement and friendly competition in this small-town bakery.
