The 34-year-old artist, whose real name is Kisean Anderson, and his mother, 61, appeared in federal court on Friday after a grand jury in Miami charged them with one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and five counts of wire fraud. The charges stem from their involvement in a scheme to defraud sellers of high-end vehicles, jewelry, and other goods using fraudulent documents.
Prosecutors from the U.S. attorney's office for the Southern District of Florida allege that Mr. Kingston and Ms. Turner fraudulently claimed to have executed monetary transfers for payments on expensive items, even though no such transfers had taken place. The scheme resulted in the defendants obtaining more than $1 million worth of property, the prosecutors said.
If convicted on all charges, both Mr. Kingston and Ms. Turner could face a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison for each count. The lawyer representing the accused singer and his mother has yet to respond to requests for comment on the matter.
This is not the first legal trouble for Mr. Kingston. He is also accused of violating the terms of a two-year probation sentence on felony charges of trafficking stolen property, with the probation term set to expire on October 1, 2025.
Ms. Turner, on the other hand, has a prior criminal record. She pleaded guilty in 2006 to charges of bank fraud and filing fraudulent loan applications, leading to a prison sentence of 16 months. She was released in March 2007.
In addition to the wire fraud charges, Mr. Kingston and Ms. Turner were accused of participating in an organized scheme to defraud multiple establishments, including a car dealership and a jeweler, out of more than $50,000. The arrest warrants also implicated them in the theft of a Cadillac Escalade from the dealership and $480,000 worth of jewelry from an individual.
Authorities had previously arrested Mr. Kingston in May during a raid at a residence listed as his home in Southwest Ranches, Florida, while his mother was arrested on the same day. The arrest took place in Fort Irwin, California.
Despite the legal troubles, Mr. Kingston expressed gratitude to his family, friends, legal team, and fans for their support on social media after being arrested and posting bail.
The case against Sean Kingston and his mother highlights the seriousness of fraud and the potential consequences individuals may face for engaging in such activities. The legal process will determine their guilt or innocence, and the story will continue to develop as it goes to trial.
