In a tragic incident, the Memphis Police Department (MPD) is currently investigating a shooting that occurred in the Orange Mound area.
The incident took place around 7 p.m. as officers swiftly surrounded the area near Carnes Avenue and Grand. Upon arrival, they discovered a shocking scene, with five victims having sustained gunshot wounds.
Out of the five victims, three were in critical condition and were immediately rushed to the hospital for emergency medical care. Unfortunately, two others succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.
The MPD has reported that all six victims currently being treated in the hospital are in stable condition, providing a glimmer of hope amidst this tragedy. Furthermore, one victim has been released from the hospital, showing signs of progress in their recovery.
Memphis Mayor Paul Young issued a statement in response to the shooting, expressing his concern and vowing to support the police department in their investigation.
Initially, MPD had reported that a total of eleven individuals had been transported to the hospital with gunshot injuries, resulting in a total of 16 injuries. However, it has since been clarified that only eight people were actually injured in the incident. This discrepancy likely arose due to multiple reports of the same victims during the chaotic aftermath of the shooting.
The investigation into this appalling incident is still ongoing, as the MPD is working diligently to bring those responsible to justice and provide answers to the victims and their families. Authorities are also urging anyone with information related to the shooting to come forward and assist in the investigation.
