In a tragic incident that unfolded in the early hours of Saturday morning, an officer and a civilian were killed, while another officer and three additional individuals sustained injuries in a shooting in the Gila River Indian Community in Arizona.

The Gila River Police Department stated that officers had responded to a disturbance involving a large crowd at a residence in Santan, District 4 of the community around 2 a.m. local time. Multiple gunshots were fired during the incident, resulting in six people being shot.

Officer Joshua Briese, who had been with the force for less than a year and was still undergoing field training, tragically succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. Additionally, an unidentified individual who was shot was pronounced dead at the scene.

Another officer was also struck and remains in serious but stable condition at the hospital. The three remaining civilians who were shot are currently receiving medical treatment and are expected to recover, as per the police.

As of Saturday evening, no suspects have been named, and no arrests have been made, according to investigators. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing and now includes assistance from the FBI.

This incident carries a poignant connection, as Officer Briese's father also lost his life while serving as an officer in the line of duty in a car crash in 2006, according to ABC affiliate KNXV.

Gila River Indian Community Governor Stephen Roe Lewis expressed his condolences to the victims, stating, "I know I speak for our entire Community when I say that we grieve for our fallen and injured police officers and every Community member touched by such tragic violence. Nothing cuts deeper than a life cut short. We will pray for our officers and their families, and for every Community member, every loved one, and every family impacted by what happened this morning."

The community remains deeply saddened by this senseless act of violence, as they mourn the loss of an officer and a civilian and support those who were injured. Thoughts and prayers are extended to all those affected by this tragedy.
