In an alarming incident caught on video, a man wearing a Palestinian flag pin launched a violent attack on a veteran for supporting Israel, ultimately leading to a shooting. The incident took place in Newton, Massachusetts, where tensions escalated between two groups with opposing views on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The unidentified attacker was captured on film shouting derogatory remarks at a small group proudly waving the Israeli flag, accusing them of "defending genocide" and labeling them as "sick." As the verbal altercation intensified, the assailant sprinted across the road, targeting Scott Hayes, one of the group members identified by authorities as an Iraq war veteran.
Other protesters quickly joined in, attempting to release Hayes from the clutches of the assailant. Disturbing footage showed two men stomping on the attacker's face and neck in their effort to pull him off. As the brawl unfolded, Hayes, amidst the chaos, retrieved a firearm from his shorts, though it remains unclear from the video whether he shot the assailant or if the gun discharged accidentally during the struggle.
After the attacker finally released his grip, Hayes urgently called for witnesses to dial emergency services, consciously reassuring a concerned woman to step away. Remarkably, Hayes then assisted the wounded assailant by removing his shirt and helping him lie down on the pavement while awaiting paramedics.
Although Hayes himself is not Jewish, witnesses at the scene disclosed that he frequently participates in pro-Israel protests, proudly carrying both American and Israeli flags. The Newton Police Department promptly responded to the incident, arresting Hayes, who now faces charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon as well as violation of a constitutional right causing injury.
Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan stated that Hayes possessed the firearm used in the shooting legally. The unnamed attacker was subsequently rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The status of his condition and potential charges against him remain undisclosed at this time.
Witnesses expressed their dismay and frustration over the chaotic brawl, with some questioning the decision to charge Hayes. They noted the alarming nature of the attack and the troubling implications of antisemitism and anti-Israel sentiment. While authorities continue their investigation, Hayes' supporters have launched a crowdfunding campaign on GoFundMe to assist with his legal expenses. The campaign has already raised an impressive $54,000 from concerned individuals.
Acting Newton Chief of Police George McMains has urged the public to come forward with any additional information, including photos and videos of the incident. In light of the incident, the Newton Police Department will be providing increased patrols near houses of worship as a precautionary measure.
As the case unfolds, it remains to be seen how the legal proceedings will develop. The incident serves as a stark reminder of how disagreements over political and religious beliefs can escalate into violence, leaving community members concerned for their safety and fostering the need for dialogue and understanding.
