In a shocking turn of events, Kenyan police have apprehended a man they describe as a "serial killer" believed to be responsible for the brutal murders of nine women. The victims' mutilated bodies were discovered in a disused quarry used as a rubbish dump, sending shockwaves through the nation.
The suspect, identified as Collins Jomaisi Khalusha, 33, was apprehended at a bar in the early hours of Monday morning while he was engrossed in watching the Euro final. Upon his arrest, Khalusha confessed to an alarming number of murders, revealing that he had killed a staggering 42 women since the year 2022, including his own wife.
This horrifying revelation has left many Kenyans appalled, questioning how such a high number of murders could have gone unnoticed by the authorities. Mohamed Amin, head of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), acknowledged this concern, stating that investigations were ongoing to determine how these crimes remained undetected for two years.
Following Khalusha's apprehension, he led the police to his residence, located just 100 meters from the crime scene. As evidence, the police displayed items recovered from his house, including 10 phones, a laptop, identity cards, personal female clothing, and a machete believed to have been used for dismemberment. Additionally, they discovered nine sacks similar to those used to dispose of the victims' bodies.
Meanwhile, the investigation at the Mukuru quarry continues. The police have cordoned off the site where the bodies were found in various stages of decomposition. While officials confirmed the recovery of nine bodies, local residents claim that the number is higher. Joseph Waweru, who has been involved in retrieving the bodies, informed the BBC that he had counted 16 severely dismembered bodies so far.
Authorities are diligently interrogating Khalusha to ascertain the motive behind these gruesome murders. He is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday. The suspect's arrest was facilitated by a "forensic analysis" of a mobile phone belonging to one of the victims, Josephine Mulongo Owino, which revealed mobile money transactions conducted on the day she went missing.
In an effort to uncover other potential victims, the police have urged families who suspect their loved ones may have fallen prey to these horrifying crimes to come forward and provide information.
Expressing concern over the proximity of the dumpsite to a police station, Kenya's police watchdog has launched an investigation to determine any potential police involvement in the crimes. To ensure impartial investigations, the officers working at the station have been transferred, according to acting police chief Douglas Kanja.
This chilling discovery of the serial killer and the gruesome murders has come at a challenging time for Kenya's police force. The recent deadly protests against planned tax increases have already tarnished the reputation of the police, with allegations of unlawful arrests and abductions. Amidst calls for swift investigations into the protests, Kenyans are now demanding the same diligence in addressing the Mukuru deaths.
As the nation grapples with the horrors of these murders, further details about the investigation, post-mortem examinations, and the potential involvement of other individuals are expected to emerge in the coming days.
