In a recent incident that has left locals and beachgoers on high alert, lifeguards in Del Mar, California have closed beaches to swimming and surfing following a shark attack. The incident occurred on Sunday morning when a 46-year-old man was bitten by a shark on his torso, left arm, and hand.
According to authorities in Del Mar, the attack took place approximately 100 yards offshore from the Beach Safety Center at 17th Street. The victim, who was part of a group of regular ocean swimmers, was immediately rushed to a hospital in La Jolla. Thankfully, his injuries, though significant, are not believed to be life-threatening.
Del Mar Lifeguard Chief Jon Edelbrock expressed relief about the victim's condition, stating, "My understanding is that the patient is stable, he was in the OR last I heard, so we're very happy and feel fortunate that he's doing well."
Following protocols established by the California Marine Safety Chiefs Association and the Shark Lab at California State University Long Beach, lifeguards have closed Del Mar beaches for swimming and surfing within a one-mile radius of the incident. Signs have been posted, and neighboring jurisdictions have been informed of the closures. The affected area spans from 6th Street to North Beach.
The closure is expected to remain in effect until 9 a.m. on Tuesday, after which the water will be reopened for public use. This precautionary measure aims to ensure the safety of beachgoers in the wake of this unsettling shark attack.
Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident in the region. Just last week, further up the shore towards Los Angeles in Orange County, ocean access in San Clemente was temporarily closed due to a shark sighting and a close encounter with a surfer. Fortunately, the surfer, Evan Garcia, escaped unharmed, reflecting on his lucky escape saying, "There's people out there who have been injured by sharks, and I'm so lucky that it only got my board."
These recent events serve as a stark reminder of the potential dangers that lurk beneath the surface of our coastal waters. While shark attacks are relatively rare, heightened caution and adherence to safety measures are advised when enjoying beach activities.
Authorities and lifeguards will continue to closely monitor the situation, ensuring the safety of beachgoers while facilitating the reopening of Del Mar beaches as soon as it is deemed safe to do so.
