**Redstone Criticizes CBS Leadership Over Handling of Dokoupil Interview**

In a recent AdWeek panel, Shari Redstone, chair of CBS parent company Paramount Global, criticized CBS leadership's response to a controversial interview conducted by "CBS Mornings" co-host Tony Dokoupil. Redstone asserted that the network made a "bad mistake" in their handling of Dokoupil's interview with author Ta-Nehisi Coates. This comes in contrast to CBS editorial leadership's earlier stance that Dokoupil had breached the network's editorial standards.

Redstone expressed clear support for Dokoupil, stating, "I think Tony did a great job with that interview. He handled himself and showed the world what civil discourse is." She emphasized that Dokoupil provided a necessary system of checks and balances and demonstrated accountability during the interview. Notably, Redstone mentioned that she had communicated her support directly to Dokoupil and was pleased CBS provided a platform for Coates to discuss his new book, "The Message."

The contentious interview centered around Coates' portrayal of Israel’s treatment of Palestinians in his newly released book. Dokoupil challenged Coates on the content, comparing the book's arguments to "extremist" writings and criticizing Coates for not including the Israeli perspective. During Monday's editorial meeting, CBS News executives stated that Dokoupil's conduct had violated the network's standards.

Redstone, however, argued that the CBS executives had mishandled the ensuing controversy. "I've been working with the CEOs and those involved in our diversity training. We all agree that this was not handled correctly," she remarked. Redstone emphasized the need for consistent standards applied across all issues and the importance of understanding core issues to challenge views civilly—a standard she believes Dokoupil upheld.

CBS News and Stations president and CEO Wendy McMahon, along with her deputy Adrienne Roark, initiated a review involving the network's standards and practices unit, as well as the race and culture unit, following internal complaints about the interview. While CBS defended the action as respectful and pointed out multiple staff concerns regarding Dokoupil's conduct, Redstone remains firm in her criticism.

Redstone, known for her support of Israel and efforts to combat antisemitism, underlined that education on challenging people civilly is crucial. She reiterated the necessity for uniform standards regardless of individual positions on controversial issues.
